No, I’m not quitting my day job. But, I would want to work for David Eggers if I did!
Helping my students achieve academic success is why I do what I do, but my work is not confined to the classroom. I am intentional in assessing each student, and investing time to identify their individual needs. Each student has a unique story, and it takes time to understand the complexities of the plot. Even as the story unfolds it is important to create a space where each student can become vulnerable so they can feel safe enough to address the things that are getting in the way of their success. We can’t expect students to become vulnerable and expose their weaknesses in an unsafe environment.
Dave Eggers knows what he is doing, and he is in the business of creating these safe spaces. I love the holistic approach that he has established with 826 Valencia. What David is doing bucks conventional wisdom, and I admire how he is repurposing empty store fronts and turning them into an amazing learning spaces. The video below is about 25 minutes long, and I hope that you take the time to watch it.
If I ever leave my current role, I hope I am brave enough to follow in David’s footsteps and create something truly remarkable.
What are you doing every day that is truly remarkable?
