Press, Cover & Balance
Coach Clark’s Defensive Tactics Cheat Sheet & Homework
1st Defender — PRESS
Ball Pressure
- Role: Nearest defender steps instantly to apply pressure on the ball carrier.
- Approach: Sprint fast while the ball travels; chop steps to slow down upon arrival.
- Body Shape: Stay low, on toes, side-on to force the play toward the sideline or non-dominant foot.
- Objective: Stop forward advancement, deny easy passes, and delay the attack.
2nd Defender — COVER
Support & Angle
- Role: Positions at a ~45° angle behind the 1st Defender to support if beaten.
- Distance: Close enough to challenge immediately, far enough to deny penetrating passes.
- Communication: Loudly direct the press (e.g., “Force left!”, “I’ve got your back!”).
- Objective: Protect central passing lanes and step in if the 1st defender gets dribbled.
3rd Defender — BALANCE
Compactness
- Role: Defenders furthest from the ball tuck in toward the middle of the pitch.
- Positioning: Drop slightly deeper than cover defenders to guard high-danger scoring zones.
- Scanning: Regularly check over shoulders to track weak-side runners.
- Objective: Prevent switches of play and keep the team defensively compact.
Key On-Field Cues
“Press on the Pass”
Move while the ball is rolling, not after it lands.
“Force Sideline”
Use the touchline as an extra defender.
“Slide & Lock”
Shift together as a unit to shut down space.
Player Reflection Assignment
✎ Bring handwritten to next practiceSection A: Core Concepts
- 1st Defender (Press): What is your primary goal when stepping to the ball? Why must you slow down (chop steps) right before reaching the attacker?
- 2nd Defender (Cover): Where should you position yourself relative to the 1st defender, and what specific passing lane are you trying to block?
- 3rd Defender (Balance): What is your job when the ball is on the opposite side of the field? Why do we “tuck in” toward the middle?
Section B: Tactical Diagrams (Draw on Paper)
-
Scenario 1 — Wing Play: Sketch a soccer pitch and draw positions for the Press, Cover, and Balance defenders when the opponent’s right winger gets the ball near the sideline.
- Show the body angle of the 1st defender forcing play wide.
- Show where Cover and Balance shift to stay compact.
- Scenario 2 — Communication: If the 1st defender gets dribbled past, what exact words should the 2nd defender yell? What should the original 1st defender do immediately after being beaten?
